Washington Mutual Bank

Just a very short rant!

We've tried our ATM cards (6 cards, for 3 different bank accounts at Washington Mutual) at 5 different French banks (roughly 10 branches in total).

Nothing works. We cannot get money out.

I've spent over one hour on the phone back to the US with WAMU (washington mutual) in 8 phone calls (luckily free calls since I'm using Skype). They cannot help us. They simply do not know what is wrong.

I won't waste any more of your reading time by going into more details.

Just wanted to express, OUT LOUD, how UNBELIEVEABLY DISAPOINTED WE ARE WITH WASHINGTON MUTUAL.

I know you're probably well beyond this... but have you
(a) had WAMU unlock your ATM card for international use (something they should do remotely if needed)
(b) matched symbols, making sure that at least one of the symbols on the back of your card is also on the machine you're trying?

I often used my credit cards to withdraw money in foreign countries. You just have to set up a PIN which you can do on the phone. The only problem is that they can charge a hefty fee ($3-$20/transaction) and treat it as a cash advance so you're getting charged interest from the day you withdraw even if you carry no other balance. Not great for long term. An Amex card at an Amex change booth would probably be best, rate-wise. They advertise themselves as being great at this kind of thing!

You can also use your credit card to get cash at a money changer, but the same fees apply as above.

I've seen people wiring money. (Can you wire money to yourself??)

That's all I've got for now... argh! Keep us updated and let me know if there is anything I can do for you here (like wiring you a loan!)

Saw your blog about option one mortgage - as it is along the same lines I thought I would share this link with you. We were paying far too much for family things like clothes for us and the kids, games consoles inc the new Wii and soon to be PS3, car insurance/home insurance/pet insurance, broadband, mobile phones, landline calls, home and garden items, camping equipment and utilities/loans etc - you name it, we were spending too much on it.

Then a friend of mine recommended a site called www.bargainplace.co.uk. We were able to get cheaper electricity, gas, mobile phone, broadband and loan deals at bargainplace. Thanks to my friend (and the site) I am saving something like £100 a month and can afford an extra holiday abroard each year. Booked of course on www.bargainplace.co.uk. Thanks bargainplace ;-) !!
